What is Vitamin-D?
You wouldn’t be surprised but this is called the “sunshine Vitamin” for obvious reasons. Vitamin D can be synthesised in the skin via sunlight, in temperate climates. For those who are living off of the equator- where the weather doesn’t justify sunny, there is limited vitamin D production in the body. If you are in perpetual winter climates, then your body will become deficient in Vitamin-D.
It is a fat soluble vitamin, much like Vitamin A, E and K that are absorbed by the body through the lymphatic system and then into the blood circulation.
Why Is Vitamin-D Needed For Bone Growth?
This is an important vitamin needed for the regulation of the body’s absorption of calcium. This means that even if your diet is calcium-rich, not having enough vitamin-D means that your body will not be able to absorb the calcium and it will go to waste.
Bone growth is dependent on the level of calcium in the body. Calcium can help bone growth to be at the full potential only if the body has a sufficient amount of Vitamin D in it. Vitamin deficiency means that there is less calcium being utilized by the body from the food, and hence weaker the bone and slower the bone growth.
Symptoms That You Are Deficient On Vitamin-D
The symptoms of low vitamin D levels can manifest in a variety of ways:
- Muscle weakness
- Stiff joints and bone pain
- Excessive sweating
- Tiredness and constant aches and pains
In the case of children, deficiency can lead to soft bones and conditions like rickets, bow legs, knock knees and other bone deformities. For kids, this can bring about the onset of serious bone conditions like arthritis.
Low levels of vitamin-D are linked to bone conditions in adults like osteomalacia wherein the bones become soft and brittle due to loss in calcium. Conditions like osteoporosis, which is the loss in bone density can also set in earlier.
